How many bags will I need to bed a standard 12x12 stall?

It depends on your target depth, but a 12x12 stall bedded to about 3 to 4 inches typically takes somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 bags to start. After the initial bed is down, you'll use far less for daily top-ups. If you want a more precise estimate based on your stall dimensions, give us a call.

How often should I be doing a full strip-out versus just topping up?

That depends on how heavily the stall is used and how well you're maintaining the daily clean-up. With consistent removal of soiled patches and regular top-ups, most owners on a single horse get a week or two before a full strip is needed. The better you maintain depth, the longer the bedding performs.

My horse has heaves — is low dust bedding actually going to make a difference?

It can, yes. Dust is a known respiratory irritant for horses with heaves or other airway sensitivities, and switching to a low dust bedding is one of the first things vets tend to recommend alongside ventilation improvements. These shavings won't eliminate all dust in a barn environment, but they reduce a meaningful source of it right at the stall level.

Where do I buy single bags, and why does the button send me to UFA?

UFA Farm & Ranch Supply stocks our shavings at stores right across Alberta, and for one or two bags that is simply a better deal for you — same price, picked up the same day, instead of paying a courier to haul a bulky bag to your door. We handle the volume side ourselves: pallets and truckloads come direct from us.

Are these shavings kiln dried?

Yes. The shavings are dried to reduce moisture content, which is part of what makes the absorbency perform the way it does from day one. Wet or green shavings hold far less before they break down.

How does pallet pricing and pickup work?

Pallets are pickup only from our Olds plant, and they're priced by the pallet rather than the bag, which saves you meaningfully once you're bedding more than a stall or two. Send us a request through the pallet option on this page and we'll confirm your price and book you a pickup time, usually within one business day. We don't deliver single pallets — if it needs to come to you, it goes as a full truckload.

What counts as a truckload, and how do I get a delivered price?

A full load is 34 pallets inside Alberta and 28 anywhere else. Choose Truckload on this page, tell us the town it's going to and what you've got on site for unloading, and we'll come back with a delivered price within one business day. Nothing is charged until you've seen and approved that number.

I've never used bagged shavings before — is this easy to get started with?

As straightforward as bedding gets. Open the bag, spread the shavings to a 3 to 4 inch depth, and you're done. No soaking, no fluffing, no prep work. Most first-time users are surprised at how far a bag goes once it's spread out.

How do pine shavings compare to wood pellet bedding in terms of absorbency and cost?

Wood pellets can absorb more per pound of product and expand significantly when wet, which some owners prefer. Shavings tend to be easier to manage for daily top-ups, spread more intuitively, and feel more familiar to horses and handlers used to traditional stall bedding. Cost comparison depends on your source and volume, but for most barns running standard stall management, shavings offer a solid balance of performance and practicality.

Can I compost used pine shavings?

Yes. Used pine shavings compost well and are a good addition to a farm compost pile. Pine does break down more slowly than straw, so mixing with other organic material speeds the process along. Many customers spread composted shavings on pastures or garden beds once fully broken down.
