I've never used a slow feeder before. Is this hard to set up?

Not at all. You slide the net over the bale, cinch the drawstring, and you're done. The bigger learning curve is for your horse, not you — which is why we recommend offering loose hay alongside the net for the first week so your animals can figure it out at their own pace. Most horses are feeding confidently from the net within a few days. \

My bales vary a bit in size from load to load. Which size should I buy?

Go with the larger size if your bales vary. A net that's slightly roomy on a smaller bale is no problem — a net that's too tight on a bigger bale won't cinch properly and can stress the drawstring. When in doubt, size up. \

Is the 1" hole size safe for horses or is it too restricting?

The 1" is safe when matched to the right animal and hay type — it's designed for minis, ponies, and horses that have already mastered the 1.5". It's not recommended as a starting point for most horses, and it doesn't work well with fine, short, or compressed bales. If you're unsure, start with 1.5" and work down only if you find your horse is eating too quickly. \

How does this compare to just using a hay ring without a net?

A hay ring on its own keeps hay contained but doesn't slow down how fast your horses eat. Adding the NAG Bag net to the ring — or using the bag on its own — is what actually controls consumption rate and cuts waste. The net is doing the real work of mimicking natural trickle feeding. Used together, a hay ring and NAG Bag give you the best of both: containment and slow feeding. \

Can multiple horses share one net?

Yes, and it works well for most herds. Just make sure there's enough room at the bale for all of them to access it without one dominant horse monopolizing the whole thing. For competitive herds, some owners set up two bags side by side to keep things peaceful. \

Does the net work with compressed or alfalfa bales?

Yes — the 2" and 2.75" hole sizes both handle compressed bales and alfalfa well. The 1.5" works with alfalfa too. The 1" hole is the one to avoid with compressed bales, as the tighter mesh combined with dense, springy hay makes it too difficult for most horses to eat from comfortably. \

Will my horse get frustrated and damage the net?

Frustration usually comes from introducing the net too quickly or choosing a hole size that's too small for the hay type. When introduced properly — alongside loose hay for the first week — most horses adapt well and actually prefer trickle feeding. If you're seeing repeated damage, the hole size or hay type is usually the culprit, and we're happy to help you troubleshoot. \

Is this net still effective in winter when horses need more forage?

Yes — you just want to think about hole size. In cold months when your horses need higher intake, moving up a hole size (for example from 1.5" to 2") lets them eat a little faster while still keeping waste down and hay in place. The 2.75" is also a popular choice in colder climates for exactly this reason. \
