I've never used a slow feed hay net before — where do I start?

Once they've got the hang of it, most horses prefer the net to loose hay — trickle feeding is natural for them. \

The 1.5" or even the 1" mesh is what you want. The smaller the hole, the slower the consumption — which means your easy keeper is working harder for every bite and spending more time with the net before it's empty. Pair it with good hay testing and you've got a solid weight management tool. \

Can slow feeding with a hay net help with ulcers?

It can make a meaningful difference. Horses produce stomach acid continuously, and when there's no forage to buffer it, that acid builds up and causes damage. Keeping forage available around the clock — even in small amounts — helps maintain the stomach environment that prevents ulcers from forming and supports healing in horses already dealing with them. Slow feeding is one of the most straightforward and vet-supported changes you can make. \

Do these work for other animals besides horses?

Yes. The 1.5" works well for donkeys, ponies and horses. The 1" is well suited for minis and ponies, goats, sheep, and even rabbits and chickens. The 2.75" can work for cattle when you want to keep hay in the feeder without restricting consumption too much. Is the Trailer Bag safe to use overnight in a stall?

Yes, and it's a great use for it. Hanging one in the stall gives your horse something to graze from through the night, which is exactly when they'd naturally be foraging anyway. Just make sure it's hung or positioned where a shod horse can't paw at it and catch a shoe. \

What if my horse gets frustrated and starts attacking the net?

Usually that means the mesh is too small for the hay type, or the transition happened too fast. Go back to offering loose hay alongside the net for a week or two, and double-check that your mesh matches your hay — fine or short hay through a small mesh is a recipe for frustration.
