Arena Dust and Your Horse's Lungs: What Heaves-Prone Horses Need

Horses breathe at footing height and inhale far more arena dust than the rider. What that dust is, why it triggers heaves and inflammatory airway disease, and the four changes that cut it: watering, a binder, ventilation, and hay.

Short answer: the cough at the end of the ride is usually the arena. Horses breathe at footing height, move ten times more air per minute than a person at rest, and inhale the fine silica and organic dust the footing throws up. That dust is the most common avoidable trigger for heaves (recurrent airway obstruction) and inflammatory airway disease in indoor-kept horses. Four things cut it: hold moisture in the footing, bind the fines with a product like WHOA Dust, move air through the building, and stop feeding dusty hay in the same air.

What arena dust is

Footing dust is not one thing. Kick a dry arena and you raise:

  • Silica from sand grinding down under hooves. The finest particles, under 10 microns, go deep into the lung.
  • Organic dust from manure, old hay, and wood or fibre in the footing. This carries mould spores and endotoxin, which is what the immune system reacts to.
  • Base material brought up by a deep drag: fine, hard, and the worst of the lot.

The smaller the particle, the deeper it goes and the longer it stays. The haze at the far end of the arena is the fraction you can see; the fraction that matters is smaller than that.

Why horses get more of it than you do

Three reasons. Their nose is two to three feet off the footing, in the densest part of the cloud. A cantering horse moves far more air per minute than a standing rider. And they are in there for the whole lesson, every lesson, often boarded in a barn attached to the same air.

Riders and coaches are not immune. People who spend their working day in a dusty indoor report the same cough, and the same improvement when the dust goes.

What it does

Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) is the mild end: a cough at the start of work, more mucus, a horse that takes longer to recover after a canter. Many young performance horses have it and nobody has noticed.

Heaves, now called severe equine asthma, is the far end: a horse that coughs at rest, has a visible heave line along the belly, and struggles to breathe on a bad day. It is not curable, and it is managed almost entirely by removing dust from the horse's air. Vets will tell you the arena and the hay are the two places to start.

Neither one is caused by a single dusty ride. Both are caused by years of them.

The four changes

1. Hold moisture in the footing

Footing at 20–25% moisture does not dust. Most indoors in a Canadian winter are far below that by noon. Water in the evening so it soaks instead of evaporating, and read How to Water a Horse Arena Less for the routine.

2. Bind the fines

Water alone does not stop the smallest particles from rising once the surface dries. A binder does. WHOA Dust charges the fine particles so they link together and settle into the footing instead of hanging in the air. It is not a salt, so it does not dry hooves or corrode the building, and it is not an oil. 3. Move the air

An indoor with the doors shut all winter recycles the same dust. Open the end doors when you can, run the ridge vents, and if the arena shares air with the barn, treat the barn aisle the same way. A ventilated arena with dusty footing is still dusty; ventilation is the second fix, not the first.

4. Fix the hay

A heaves-prone horse breathing clean arena air and then eating dusty hay from a net at nose height has not been helped much. Soak or steam hay for the affected horse, feed it low, and keep round bales out of the arena air. Slow feeders in the paddock, not the aisle, for that horse. How you know it is working

The cough at the end of the ride goes first, usually within a couple of weeks of the footing being treated. The far end of the arena stays visible through a full lesson. The horse recovers faster after a canter. Riders stop clearing their throats on the drive home. If the cough does not change, the hay or the barn is the source, and it is time to talk to your vet.

Questions people ask

Can arena dust cause heaves?
It is one of the two main triggers, with dusty hay. Genetics load the gun; dust pulls the trigger.

Is WHOA Dust safe for a horse that already has heaves?
Yes, it is non-toxic, biodegradable, and has no chlorides or oils. Less airborne dust is the whole point.

Does a mask or a nebulizer fix it?
They help the horse. They do not fix the arena, and every other horse in the barn is still breathing it.

What about rubber or fibre footing?
Rubber crumb does not make silica dust, but the sand it is mixed with does, and fibre breaks down into organic dust. Both still benefit from a binder. Our footing guide covers the mixes.
