How thick should the rubber be for a horse stall?

3/4" is the standard recommendation for horse stalls and what this kit uses. Thinner mats — 1/2" or less — compress more quickly under standing weight and tend to curl at the edges over time. 3/4" holds its shape and cushioning through years of daily use. \

Do the mats need to be glued or anchored down?

In most stall installations, no. The weight of the rubber holds the mats in place under normal use. If you have a horse that paws aggressively or shifts bedding frequently, you can use rubber mat adhesive along the seams for extra stability — but most setups do not need it. \

How do these compare to interlocking rubber tile systems?

Interlocking tiles give you more flexibility in sizing and layout, but the seams create more places for moisture and waste to get underneath over time. Pre-cut slab mats like these have fewer seams in a standard stall, which means easier maintenance and a tighter floor overall. Trade-off is that replacement is by the panel rather than individual tile. \

Are the mats made from recycled rubber? Does that affect performance or smell?

Yes, they are made from recycled rubber. There can be a mild rubber odour when first installed — this is normal and fades within a few days of airing out. Performance is not affected. Recycled rubber is widely used for stall flooring precisely because it handles the demands of barn life as well as virgin rubber does. \

Will rubber mats make the stall colder in winter?

Rubber is a better insulator than bare concrete or packed dirt, so in most cases it actually helps retain a bit of warmth at floor level. Horses standing on rubber in cold months typically show less stiffness than those on hard bare floors. A proper layer of bedding on top makes the biggest difference for winter comfort. \

Can these mats be used in wash bays or grooming areas as well as stalls?

How many pallets or kits would I need for a 10-stall barn?

How long do rubber stall mats typically last?

With normal use and basic maintenance, quality 3/4" rubber stall mats last 10 to 20 years in most barn environments. The main things that shorten mat life are extended exposure to petroleum-based products, uneven or shifting bases underneath, and prolonged standing water on the bottom surface. Keep the base solid and clean under them and they will outlast most of what is in your barn. \

Is there a weight limit or maximum horse size these mats are rated for?

There is no practical weight ceiling for standard horse use. These mats are designed for equine stall environments and handle draft breeds, warmbloods, and heavy stock horses without issue.
